Tardy/Late Students

Doors open on school mornings at 7:35am. Tardy time is 7:45-9:00 a.m. Tardies are unexcused without a doctor excuse. During homebase, students should be in their homebase -not in the hallway, at their locker, in the restroom, or elsewhere without permission or a pass from their homebase teacher.

Students arriving late to school should enter the front lobby doors to sign in with the Attendance Secretary and obtain a pass to their classroom. Chronic tardiness is unacceptable and will result in disciplinary action to include serving detention, Extended School Assignment (ESA) and/or Due Process Hearing with Franklin County Truancy Officer.

Absent Students

STATE LAW REQUIRES CUSTODIAL PARENTS TO CALL AND NOTIFY THE         SCHOOL BY 9:00 A.M. ON EACH DAY OF YOUR CHILD’S ABSENCE.

The Attendance Office direct line is 614-828-4900.

Parent/Guardians are welcome to leave a voicemail at anytime during the evening or night. Until we hear from the custodial parent, your child will be considered unexcused and truant. The Attendance secretary will make every effort to contact the custodial parent if a call is not received.

Canal Winchester School District Absence Policy.  School attendance and academic success are closely linked. Per district policy, absences are excused by parent notification for a maximum of 9 days for the school year. All other absences will require a doctor’s note.  Remember to always turn in a dentist/doctor excuse.  If a student accumulates 7 unexcused absences, a Due Process Hearing may be scheduled with Franklin County Court of Common Pleas Truancy Officer for student and/or parents. If unexcused absences continue, truancy charges will be filed by FC Courts. If a student exceeds 20 days of absences (excused or unexcused), the following actions may take place: summer school, retention, or expulsion.

Early Dismissals for authorized appointments

If your child needs to leave during the school day, he/she should bring a note from a parent/guardian to the Attendance Secretary during homebase to receive a“Permit to leave the building”pass. This will enable your child to meet you in the front lobby at a specific time without interruption to their classroom.

The parent/guardian may enter the front lobby, showing proper ID, to sign out   their child.  Please note that we require to hear from the custodial parent (by note or call) before someone other than yourself comes in to pick up your child.

The Authorized Contacts listed on your child’s Student Information Card gives the school authorization to call those listed in the event you are unavailable – for safety purposes. It does not enable your contacts to call or walk in and pick up your child without your verbal or written notification.

Early Dismissals from Nurse’s office

Student cell phone use is prohibited in school and your child may not use a cell phone to call you if he is not feeling well. Proper procedure is for the student to get teacher permission and a pass to report to the Nurse’s Office. The nurse will call the parent or authorized contact and if determined, they should come to the front lobby to pick up and sign student out unless another arrangement with the nurse has been made.
