Pat Durbin
Athletic Director/Coordinator of Student Activities

Pat joined the Canal Winchester Athletic family after a 31 year career in the Armed Forces. During his military career, Pat held many leadership positions to include his final tour of duty as a Battalion Commander of the 1st Battalion, 137th Aviation Regiment leading over 1,100 Soldiers and over 62 aircraft while deployed to the Middle East in 2014-2015. Pat’s awards include the Ohio Distinguished Service Medal and the Bronze Star which he was awarded during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2008-2009.

Pat also spent six years coaching high school basketball under Mr. Jack Purtell, current Reynoldsburg High School Head Girls basketball coach and former Athletic Director. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor teaching Communication at Ohio University. Pat holds an under-graduate degree from the University of Akron in communications with a certificate to teach speech/communications while graduating from Fort Hays State University with a Master of Science in communication.

Guided by the strategy map designed by Mr. Durbin, he strives to provide an athletic program that develops our student-athletes through education and competition in order to stimulate an attitude of discipline, honor, integrity and sportsmanship with a long-term vision of being the benchmark athletic program known for rules compliance, fiscal responsibility and student-athlete personal development.

My philosophy is simple. The value of an athletic program is not measured simply in terms of wins and losses. It’s not just how much you win, its how you win. It is important to keep winning in its proper perspective as well as learning how to accept defeat. Striving to win is more important than winning at all costs.

A major goal of every athletic program for its athletes, coaches, fans and administration is to compete in every contest with the utmost class and integrity. Learning to win with honor, or accepting defeat with humility and class are major components of high school athletics. More importantly, it contributes to the growth of our student-athlete while empowering our youth for future success by learning these valuable life lessons learned through our interscholastic activities.
